Galle is the south coast's main historic city, best known for the old fort that sits on a headland above the sea. Its ramparts, lanes and colonial-era buildings are a pleasant walk at any time of day, with cafes, small shops and views along the walls.

The fort is usually combined with the nearby beaches and a stop for lunch. Most visitors reach Galle by expressway from the airport, so it works well as a first or last stop on a south coast trip.
