Kandy was the last royal capital of Sri Lanka and is still its spiritual heart. The Temple of the Tooth, which holds a relic of the Buddha, draws pilgrims and visitors to evening ceremonies, while the lake in the middle of town makes a pleasant walk.

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya are a short drive away, and cultural dance shows run most evenings. The city is busiest during the Esala Perahera festival in mid-year, so book transport early if you plan to attend.
