Polonnaruwa replaced Anuradhapura as the capital and is better preserved, with brick palaces, a council chamber and a lakeside setting. The highlight for many is Gal Vihara, a group of massive Buddha figures carved from a single granite face.

Distances between monuments are manageable by bicycle or a short drive. Go early, when the light is soft and the site is quiet, and bring water.
